Christ Community's Beginnings: Praising God for our Past, Present and Future
Christ Community Church began as home Bible study of four couples in the summer of 1986. This small group of believers called their first full-time pastor in November of that year and began Sunday worship service in January of 1987. In their early years they met in several locations, including the First Union Bank Conference Room, the Holiday Inn Conference Room, and the Southern Pines Civic Club. By 1989 the church was formally supporting missionaries. Christ Community Church currently devotes 15% of its budget to missions and outreach.
Rev. Bill Korver was the second pastor of Christ Community Church and served the church for thirteen years. The church continued to relocate several times until the property at 387 West Pennsylvania Ave. was purchased in 1998. In 2004 Pastor Korver resigned to assume the Presidency of Carolina Bible College and Pastor Ron Ayers served as Interim Pastor until Dean Engebretson came in March 2005.
The property on Pennsylvania Ave. was sold in 2007 and the church moved to an interim location at Westgate Drive, just outside the Village of Pinehurst. Joyce Clevenger agreed to serve as Youth Director and began to nurture and grow a fledgling group of teens. The next year, 2008, ended up being another wonderful year with multiple accounts of God’s blessing, including significant numerical and ministry growth, as well as the addition of Rob Ely as our Worship Leader. Christ Community Church relocated to a new campus on 8.7 acres one mile north of the Pinehurst Traffic Circle, in 2009. This 10,500 square foot building is Phase I of a multi-phase master site plan for the campus. God continued to exemplify His faithfulness through further growth as additional services were added. Due to explosive growth in children attendance Brenda Wilson was called to join the staff as Director of Children’s Ministries.
2011 was a year of many God sightings! The year started with a ‘Christmas Gift’ of an opportunity to purchase 1.87 acres of adjoining property. Later in January, a building design team was created to define the next phase of campus expansion. February brought the introduction of a new Saturday evening service in an effort to target a demographic niche within our community; the three Sunday morning services were reduced to two and the service times were altered to increase fellowship and reduce parking congestion. In March, Fred Berkheimer was added to the staff as Director of Adult Ministries to provide leadership and coordination of various ministries both inside and outside the church. Later in the spring, the annual leadership retreat resulted in Vision 2015, a five year refresh of the priorities that God is calling Christ Community Church in order to reach the world. In September, Pastor Aaron Kaun began his ministry to a healthy and dynamic youth group, and he is transitioning very well to the ministry God has for him and his family here at CCC. In the same month the building design team revealed the concept design for the future campus and a capital campaign was lunched to increase our ministry depth and breadth by enlarging the facilities.
The proposed building plans for the next phase of our campus expansion are currently being finalized and on their way through the approval process. We are greatly looking forward to watching God work in and through CCC as He leads us in our vision and purposes to reach the world (locally, regionally, and internationally) for Christ!
Jesus is fulfilling his promise that He will “build his church…” Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Our current schedule of services is as follows: Saturday Evenings @ 5:30pm, Sunday Mornings @ 9:15am and 11am.
